Donna Lee Parsons (1945 – 2003) recording supervisor, Chaplin impersonator.

Dave Parsons was raised in Boca Raton, Florida. He and his wife, Fish, had three children, and between them authored the South Florida punk rock fanzine, Mouth of the Rat (named after his home town).

After divorce, Dave moved to New York in 1982 and opened Ratcage Records store and also released punk records. The store was initially under 171A Studios and later at 307 East 9th Street. Notable releases were the legendary Real Men Don’t Floss by The Young and the Useless, and Polly Wog Stew1982 by the Beastie Boys who had been hanging out at Ratcage Records. He also put together an album of his own material on electric ukulele.

In 1986, under personal and financial pressures, Dave moved to New Orleans. He started performing mime and doing Charlie Chaplin impersonations. An Italian film crew found him and asked him to do Charlie at their film premier in Rome. He then ended up in Switzerland making a living as a Chaplin impersonator, and was the official Charlie Chaplin impersonator to the Chaplin family, working with them for 15 years.

By 2001 Dave had become Donna Lee, and back in the US teamed up with Ted Gottfried and Jason Tagg as the ukulele band, Sonic Uke. They played CBGB that December, and put out an album.

Donna Lee was suffering from colon cancer, and was advised by her doctors that the best and only time for gender surgery was as soon as possible after radiation treatments. In 2003 the Beastie Boys paid Donna Lee outstanding royalties for the early albums, and she went to Thailand for surgery with Dr Preecha Tiewtranon.

Her cancer came back, and she died in a Swiss hospital later that same year.

Be friend forever from the bottom of our heart

(written by PAI’s staff) 2003

It is my pleasure that Donna Lee Parsons gave me a permission to share her personal message to you and to our transgender communities who has lost their self esteem, confident or from the illness. When you finish reading the following messages, you will notice that you are not alone, you will discover that you have so many friends around you who care and willing to help you, as they are able to be. Here I would like to describe her personal life as I met it for three weeks.

Donna Lee Parsons has diagnosed with cancer her cancer has returned as an inter-muscular tumor near the base of incision from the previous colon SX. Her psycisian has suggested the best and only time she would be viable and candidate for SRS would be as soon as possible after these radiation treatments end and to allow enough post operative healing time. So that she may be able to begin the prophylactic chemo therapy that is likely to continue for the duration of her life expectancy.

Donna has dreamed of completing her transition to female for many years and it has only been in recent years that she has been able to do anything about it. She has been on HRT since January 2002 and has been living full time as a woman since July of 2001. She is an artist, musician and performing artist. She has been the official Charlie Chaplin impersonator to the Charlie Chaplin estate and has worked closely with Chaplin family for over 15 years. Recently, she began a musical career. Donna knows that she has not many years left in her life. But she has lived a varied and exciting life. This dream of completing her SRS is the strongest desire to live at this time.

Subject Urgent request for SRS at earliest possible date

Dear Donna (Parsons)

Thanks for your inquiry. Unfortunately, Dr. Suporn finds your case too difficult to undertake for SRS. For most American patients who have been circumcised as infants, it takes him about 7 to 8 hours for Type A SRS. This is especially risky under the circumstances of your case.

We could recommend that you contact the excellent Dr. Preecha in Bangkok (http://www.pai.co.th) who can perform SRS in about 2 to 3 hours. This would be much safer for your recovery and freedom from potentially life-threatening postoperative complications.

best regards
Dr. F.W. KIM Ph.D.

Dear Dr. Preecha,

I am writing about a woman by the name of Donna Lee who is contacting you for MTF SRS. Her problem is that she has cancer. If at all possible, I ask you to accept her as a patient. Being a postop MTF myself, I can imagine few things worse than qualifying for SRS then having to die without it. If you can, please make her whole.

On July 7, we met Donna at Preecha Aesthetic Institute. She was so happy but little tired for long flight to Bangkok. Dr.Preecha and his nurses had done all check-up for Donna. In the afternoon, She was back to her room to take a rest for the operation on the next day.

Donna was with us for about 20 days. The operation was completely successful. She was so happy here visited our clinic and hospital in Bangkok. Sometime, when she had no pain, she used to play guitar, singing, and dancing around the nurse counter. When Donna left Bangkok to Switzerland, the nurses at 4th floor missed her very much. I had a chanced to meet Donna, she told me that she will continue her life and fight back from illness. She also told me that she would come back to Thailand and may continue to stay in Thailand for the rest of her life.

The photos below were taken four hours before her leaving from PREECHA AESTHETIC INSTITUTE at BNH hospital. We promise we will keep in touch with her forever.
