Ear pinning (Otoplasty)

Ear pinning (Otoplasty)

Ear pinning (Otoplasty)

Otoplasty is a surgical procedure that sets back prominent ears closer to the head. For many people, having prominent ears may be the cause of some embarrassment. Teasing at school may have affected their confidence and they might find social situations awkward. Otoplasty can help enhance the way they look and boost their confidence levels.

Ear Pinning is an operation that can be performed on a child as early as four years old, as ears are fully formed at this age. The surgery can also be performed on adults with no additional risk involved.

The otoplasty procedure

Otoplasty typically is performed to create or restore the center fold to disproportionately large or prominent ears.  The extent of the procedure depends on what changes are desired and what the surgeon’s recommendation.

However, there are several possible surgical approaches to otoplasty.  Using a commonly employed technique, the surgeon makes incisions in the back of the ear and removes skin to expose ear cartilage.  Then, the surgeon uses sutures to fold the cartilage in on itself to reshape the ear.  In some instances, the same result can be achieved without sutures by weakening the cartilage before folding it.  The incisions are closed with sutures.

By creating a more pronounced fold in the central portion of the ear, the surgeon brings the ear closer to the head.  Depending on the extent of the surgery, the procedure usually lasts about 45 min.

Postoperative Recovery

Following surgery, the ears are covered with a bulky dressing.  There is some soreness and discomfort that is easily controlled by medication.
Dressings are removed within few days.

To promote healing, you may be asked to wear a light head dressing for several weeks.

Since otoplasty incisions are made in the back of the ears, faint scars should be concealed in the creases.

The decision on when to return to work and normal activities depends on how fast you heal and how fast you feel.

FAQs for Otoplasty.

How long is the recovery for otoplasty?

You can typically return to their normal daily routines about seven to ten days following the procedure.  Medication can help with any pain or soreness. Within a week after the otoplasty surgery, the stitches are removed.

What type of surgeon should perform my procedure?

The ideal type of physician for otoplasty is an ophthalmic plastic surgeon. This type of doctor is certified by Thai Board of Plastic and is specially trained in plastic surgery of the cosmetic surgery and surrounding structures of the face.

General cosmetic surgeons do not undergo such specialized training in plastic surgery of the ears.

Will the ear pinning affect my hearing?

No. Only the outer ear is operated on, not the middle or inner ear, where hearing takes place.

How quick is recovery from Ear pinning surgery?

Adults and children are usually up and around within a few hours of surgery, although you may prefer to stay overnight in the hospital with a child until all the effects of general anesthesia wear off. The patient’s head will be wrapped in a bulky bandage immediately following surgery to promote the best molding and healing. The ears may throb or ache a little for a few days, but this can be relieved by medication. Within a few days, the bulky bandages will be replaced by a lighter head dressing similar to a headband.

Be sure to follow your surgeon’s directions for wearing this dressing, especially at night. Stitches are usually removed, or will dissolve, in about a week. Any activity in which the ear might be bent should be avoided for a month or so. Most adults can go back to work about five days after ear pinning surgery. Children can go back to school after seven days or so, if they’re careful about playground activity. You may want to ask your child’s teacher to keep an eye on the child for a few weeks.

Will there be any visible scars?

In most cases, no. The scars are hidden behind the ear. However, if you are prone to scarring problems such as keloids, you should discuss this with your doctor before the procedure.

How Thailand Became a Global Gender-Change Destination

October 27, 2015 By: Jason Gale (Bloomberg) Preecha, who performed Thailand’s first gender surgery in 1975, attributes the country’s popularity for the procedure to three things: “No. 1, it’s very cheap in Thailand,” he says. “No. 2, good result, and No. 3, good hospitality — they can have a side trip for tourism.” Read full […]
