Breast Reduction
What Is Breast Reduction Surgery?
Breast reduction surgery (also known as reduction mammaplasty) is a cosmetic surgical procedure that removes excess fat, glandular tissue, and skin from the breasts. The result is smaller, lighter, firmer, and better-shaped breasts that are more proportionate to the body.
Purpose of Breast Reduction
Breast reduction is a common plastic surgery procedure performed to reduce the size and weight of the breasts. It involves removing excess fat, sagging skin, and glandular tissue to achieve a breast size that complements the patient’s body shape.
This procedure can also help relieve discomfort associated with excessively large breasts (a condition known as macromastia), such as chronic neck, shoulder, and back pain, as well as skin irritation and posture problems.
Women who are unhappy with the size or heaviness of their breasts often choose breast reduction surgery for both aesthetic improvement and physical relief. The procedure can also help improve self-confidence and ease social discomfort caused by overly large breasts.
Breast Reduction for Men
Although breast reduction surgery is most commonly performed on women, it can also be performed on men who have enlarged breast tissue, a condition known as gynecomastia. Male breast reduction surgery helps create a flatter, firmer, and more masculine chest contour.

Proper preparation is key to ensure a safe procedure and smooth recovery after breast reduction.
Before Surgery:
Prepare comfortable clothing to wear after hospital discharge. A medical gown will be provided before entering the operating theater.
Breast Reduction mammoplasty typically is performed to reduce disproportionately large, sagging breasts. It also can reduce the size of the areola (the dark pink skin surrounding the nipple), which frequently becomes enlarged as the breast develops. Extend of procedure depends on what changes are desired and what your surgeon deems appropriate.
The most commonly employed breast reduction technique is called brassiere pattern skin reduction, involves both horizontal and vertical incisions that follow the contour of the breast. The vertical incision creates a key-hole-shaped pattern above the areola.
Working through the incision, the surgeon excises excess tissue, fat and skin on the side of the breast. Skin is removed from the area within the vertical incision and around the areola. The nipple, areola and underlying tissue are moved through this space to a new higher location.
Another technique involves completely detaching the nipple from the breast before relocating it. Since a transplanted nipple loses all sensitivity, this approach is performed only when deemed necessary for patients with extremely large breasts.
After the nipple is repositioned, skin on both sides of the breast is moved down and around the areola and then bought together to re-contour the breast.
Sutures close the wounds under the breast and around the nipple area. Following surgery, a gauze dressing may be applies to the breasts, or the patient may be placed in a surgical brassiere.

After breast reduction surgery, there is some soreness and discomfort which is easily controlled by medication. Swelling and skin discoloration around the incisions generally will subside in a few days.
After surgery, there may be a temporary loss of sensation in the nipples and breast skin. This condition will improve with time. Sutures will be removed within ten day of surgery.
Scars remain highly visible for a year following surgery, then fade to some degree. Since incisions were made around and below the nipples, scars should not be notice able even in low-cut-clothing.
Since no two breasts are the same size and shape before surgery, usually a slight variation will exist after surgery.
