Blepharoptosis is a surgical modification of dropping upper eyelid, drooping of the upper eyelid causing a narrowing of the palpebral aperture. It is often divided into two main types: congenital and acquired. The congenital type present at birth is usually the result of interference with the superior division of the oculomotor nerve, or associated with the blepharophimosis syndrome. The acquired type may result from any affection of the nerve supply of the upper eyelid musculature from a disease of the muscles themselves (e.g. myasthenia gravis) or from mechanical interference in elevating the eyelid due to the weight of a tumor, trauma or chronic tissue hypoxia (e.g. diabetes).

Unlike, blepharoplasty is a cosmetic surgery to remove wrinkle, saggy, excess skins or fat deposit at upper eyelids. To address blepharoptosis surgery for reason and open dialogue is recommended to avoid any misunderstanding. Blepharoptosis surgery will perform at Preecha Aesthetic Institute. Once you know your planning date for surgery. Here is the next step:

surgical details:

  • Inform us about any allergies, any serious medical condition(s), and all medications you’re taking (both prescription and non-prescription).
  • No Aspirin 2 days before surgery.
  • Stop vitamin E Oil 1 day before surgery.
  • Stop smoking 2 days and a month after surgery.
  • Tell doctor if you have any serious medical condition(s).
  • Plan to be in Thailand at least 6-7 days after surgery.
  • On the day before your eyelid surgery, make sure that you have ice cubes or ice pack stocked at home. Make sure to shower and shampoo before the procedure and wash your eyebrows. Cosmetics should not be worn.

The procedure usually takes about 40 - 60 minutes and perform at PAI’s clinic by using local anesthesia.

The recovery process after a Blepharoptosis may take up to a few weeks.  Patients will receive instruction for during the home care. 

The first two days doctor recommend keeping iced eye pack on the eyes to reduce bruising and swelling. 

Patients are recommended to keep their head higher than the body while sleeping as this will accelerate the recovery process.

The third day after surgery, patients are advised to keep lukewarm eye pads for comfort and wearing dark glasses for at least one week is also recommended to prevent irritation that may be caused by the wind and sun exposure.

Wearing contact lenses is prohibited until the incisions are completetely cured.  Patients who need them will be advised by surgeon when it is safe wearing them again.

Patients who undergo a Blepharoptosis may watch TV and are able to read after two or three days.  Patients may go to work in five days or a week after the operation.  The scars may however still be visible but one can use makeup to cover them.

Scars are usually well hidden and normally fade in time. Blepharoptosis may leave patients with bruises or swelling on their faces and sometimes patients become depressed from this reason.  These are some of the side effects of surgery, which are completely normal and which disappear in few weeks, after a complete healing.

Surgery Schedule (require at least 5 days after surgery in Bangkok)

  • Day 1 - Consultation and/or surgery at the same time
  • Day 2 - Surgery (if require for the next appointment)
  • Day 3 to day 5 - Recovery, rests, less reading and watching TV, computer 
  • Day 6 - Stitches will be removed
  • Day 6 - After removing stitches, you may return to work 
  • Swelling and bruising should be expected for up to two - four weeks, in some cases bruising and swelling may be evident for up to one month.
  • Normal work can be resumed 3 to 5 days after procedure (desk jobs).
  • Vigorous activity should be limited for 3 weeks, including jogging, bending, sex, or any activity that increases your blood pressure.
  • Within three months, minor swelling and bruising can usually be hidden.

Treatment after surgery
during the first 7 days

  • Removing Incisions day 5 after surgery.
  • No heavy exercise 2 weeks after surgery
  • Apply Eye Creams to help scar softer and dimmed down
  • Wearing contact lenses is prohibited until the incision are completely cured
  • Scars are usually well hidden and normally fade in time
  • Swelling and bruising can be minimizedby keeping the head elevated as much as possible during the first few days of recovery
  • The first couple of weeks following the surgery, dark sunglasses are recommended to protect the eyes fromirritation caused by the sun and wind.
  • Patients may notice that their eyes tire easily for the first several weeksof the recovery period; frequent naps are recommended.

Q: Will Blepharoptosis correct my crow's feet?

A: When performed by itself, Blepharoptosis will not correct crow's feet. However, eyelid surgery is often performed in conjunction with other treatments such as dermal fillers to eliminate crow's feet and other types of wrinkles.

Q: What causes dark circles under the eyes?

A: The skin of the eyelid is the thinnest on the human body. The darkness that can appear under the eyes is typically caused by blood circulation underneath the skin. This condition can be exacerbated by exhaustion, illness, poor nutrition, irritation and other factors.

Q: How long will eyelid surgery results last ?

A: Many eyelid surgery patients experience a dramatic improvement in the appearance of their eyes such as a more youthful aesthetic, which last for years. In some cases, Blepharoptosis may be a shot term 2 - 3 years.

Q: Will there be scarring ?

A: Incisions for Blepharoptosis are made in the creases or edges around the eyelids to minimize visible scarring. Patients considering the procedure for correction.

Q: How long is the recovery ?

A: Patients can typically return to their normal daily routines about seven to ten days following the blepharoptosis procedure. During recovery, the patient must keep his or her head elevated for the first few days. Medication can help with any pain or soreness. Within a week after the eyelid surgery, the stitches are removed.
