Made in Bangkok : Awards: Mexican Press Award, FICG; Best Mexican Documentary, Guanajuato; Audience Award, Durango.

Documentary filmmaker Flavio Florencio follows the journey of Morgana, a transgender opera singer who travels to Bangkok where she’ll represent Mexico in the Miss International Queen competition. More than anything, she wants to have a sex change operation.

There have been a flood of recent films about the trans experience. Few have conveyed so viscerally what it means to become the person you were meant to be. Funny, sensitive and moving, Florencio’s film is a delight, because in Morgana he’s found a great subject: charming, talented, charismatic, determined and vulnerable. What happens to Morgana after the competition takes her, and the audience, by surprise, and won’t be revealed here. What is revealed in every frame of this compelling and entertaining documentary is the intimate rapport between the filmmaker and his lead character. The warmth is contagious.
